Qualification

A level 1 rope access technician is able to perform a limited range of rope access tasks under the supervision of a level 3 supervisor.

IRATA Level 1 Training Courses

Prerequisites

No previous experience is required.
The minimum age of candidates is 18 years.
Candidates should be physically fit and free from any disability or medical condition that may prevent them from working safely at height. They shall ensure that they have an adequate level of fitness, and are physically able to perform the tasks expected in terms of strength, agility and co-ordination, and are able to withstand the stresses of the working environment such as heat, cold, and other inclement weather. Course Content

Relevant legislation, guidelines and standards
Safe working practices
Fitting and function of all personal equipment used in rope access Strengths and limitations of equipment
Inspection, documentation and maintenance of equipment Selection and use of anchors
Introduction to knots and rigging of ropes
Range of rope manoeuvres required by IRATA including:

• Descending and ascending using a rope and backup rope • Basic hauling and lowering systems
• Aid climbing and fall arrest techniques
• Basic rescue techniques

Assessment

1 day independent practical assessment and multiple choice question paper.

Certification

Upon successful completion the candidate will receive an internationally recognised certificate of competence in rope access, an IRATA log book, IRATA ID card and a copy of the IRATA ‘International Code of Practice’ and
‘Training Assessment and Certification Scheme’.
All IRATA qualifications should be renewed within three years of the date of the assessment. Revalidation consists of a full assessment at the required level.
