Delegates will gain skills to use work at height and basic rope access techniques to perform specialist roles including:
- Searching
- Protester removal tactics (compliant) Firearms deployment (various tactics) Hostage/other negotiations
- Covert technical installations
Prerequisites
This course is for Police Officers with an aptitude for working at height. Prior experience of working at height is an advantage but not essential. Candidates must be medically fit and healthy

Course Content
The course comprises theoretical and practical elements allowing participants to achieve competence in the personal access skills required to operate within a safe system of working at height. The course elements include:
- Legal requirements - Health and Safety at Work Act, Management of Health & Safety at Work Regulations, Personal Protective Equipment Regulations, PUWER, and LOLER.
- User checks and procedures including identification of damaged equipment
- Strengths and characteristics of equipment
- Review of working at height and rope access methods
- Principles of rescue and importance of rescue provision
- Operational Risk Assessment & Method Statements
- Application of work restraint techniques for flat roofs
- Application of work positioning and fall arrest techniques for working on and moving around a structure
- Anchor systems and basic rigging
- Application of rope access techniques for ascent and descent
- Pick-off rescue of a casualty from suspension
- Self/operative rescue plans
- Hauling and lowering systems
- Suspension intolerance procedures
- A variety of scenarios addressing difficult access/egress issues
Assessment
The course assessment is by short written test and continual practical assessment by Lyon staff. The course will include a number of scenario-based assessments under simulated operational conditions.
Certification
A certificate of attendance and test and ID card record of training will be issued to successful candidates.
Certificate valid for three years from date of assessment.
Upon successful completion of this course and following a period of consolidation, those nominated for supervisory training duties may progress to our Police Work at Height Supervisor/Trainer course.
