Lyon Fire and Rescue Service Technical Workshop December 2009

As a way of sharing knowledge and experience in the technical rope rescue field, Lyon Equipment Ltd hosted a
second specialist technical workshop specifically for the UK Fire and Rescue Services, on 8th December 2009.

Held at our Work and Rescue facility in Tebay, the event drew together Fire and Rescue rope rescue specialists from
throughout the country to observe developments in equipment and technique, and stimulate discussion on best
practice and potential solutions to technical issues.

The one day event had a heavy practical bias with demonstrations, drop tests and discussions. Delegates were also given opportunities to try some of the equipment and methods being showcased.

Topics included ‘Use of PPE for rescue loads’, ‘Edge transition methods with loaded stretchers’ and ‘Suitability of rope
rescue systems for bariatric casualties’ and the ‘What if of main line failure’. Of interest to all the delegates was a
demonstration of the PETZL EXO individual evacuation system which provoked significant discussion on options for
‘last ditch’ firefighter evacuation. A highly thought-provoking presentation was also given on Partnership Working by
Martin Holroyd of Cumbria Fire and Rescue.

The event ran into the evening with delegates and Lyon staff continuing technical discussions over dinner at the
award winning Westmorland Hotel.

Places were strictly limited to 35 delegates in order to allow interaction and focussed debate. All those attending
received a pen drive containing the day’s presentations, additional technical information and high speed video
footage of the tests carried out.

A number of other ‘themed’ workshops are proposed for the future.

Comments from delegates:

‘This was my first (Lyon Workshop), I can confirm we will definitely be supporting any future workshops. Very worthwhile.’

‘Well presented excellent day. Demonstrations on failure dynamics particularly of interest and gave me more confidence in the ability of the ID.’

‘A very good day with professional delivery.’

‘A very well presented and structured course, the instructors were honest in their opinions and very know legible on
the subject’.
