Telecoms Tower Upgrades

Severe winter weather and constant use takes its toll on even the toughest structures and this year’s weather was exceptional, even for the Lake District.

The 18m telecoms tower is a highly visual reminder of Lyon Work and Rescue’s home to those passing Junction 38 on the M6.

With the weather improving every day and a rapidly filling course calendar the tower has been subject to the biggest spring clean it’s ever had.

A thorough clean down was followed by a detailed inspection and retightening of every nut, bolt and clamp on the structure. The fixed fall arrest and security systems have been checked and the whole tower prepared for painting.

As part of Lyon’s long term investment in its training facilities the opportunity has also been taken to upgrade the base of the tower.

Spending thousands of pounds re-grading the surface and installing new drainage and soak ways may not seem worthwhile to some, but keeping the surface as trip and slip free whatever the weather is important for us and our trainees.

Only the top coat to do now, sunny weather permitting.
