Tuesday 16th September
2.00 pm – 5.00 pm - Practical Demonstrations

Photographs and video help in understanding concepts and ideas but seeing it for real brings a clarity that is unmatched. For this reason delegates see the demonstration day as an essential part of our technical symposium.

Held inside Lyon’s purpose built training facility at Tebay, the demonstration day is intended to give delegates the opportunity to see at close range dynamic tests and simulations relating directly to the following days lectures.

The demonstrations planned at present include a mix of technique and the technical.

A first for us at a symposium will be the introduction of a range of powered access machinery into the facility, with the star of the show being Cumbria Fire and Rescue Service’s new Aerial Lifting Platform (ALP) vehicle. With recent concerns over the most appropriate methods of personal fall protection in access machines we, with the kind assistance of Cumbria Fire and Rescue Service crew, hope to illustrate the issues and look at the solutions available, even for those working at extremes in time critical situations.

Following this demonstration we then have Dr Mark Taylor from Leeds University running a series of full body harness drop tests to illustrate the practical shortcomings of some designs. Not in relation to their performance against set standards, but in their effect on the human body!

Continuing on from this we have another new industry sector represented with Mr Chris Cowell of TREEMAGINERS and his colleagues illustrating the current thinking and developments in Arboricultural rope based access systems. This highly regarded team will run through the latest thinking in providing effective access on ‘natural’ structures whilst remaining compliant with the UK Work at Height
Regulations.

Because of the overwhelming interest attracted by the demonstrations, access this year is unfortunately restricted to symposium ticket holders only.
