With winter on its way, now is the time to make sure your avalanche knowledge is sharp.
Perhaps the best way to do this is still to go on a course.
However there is another way.
“SpotChecks in Avalanche Awareness”
The quiz is downloaded from the Glenmore Lodge web-site. It’s full of avalanche questions designed to challenge you and help you improve your avalanche judgements. It is made up of images, maps, video, forecasts and graphics. Some of the questions are straightforward and we hope you’ll find others more challenging.
Our aim throughout has been to present the questions in a way which is as close to reality as possible. We felt it was important to help people develop judgement in those areas that we are not always able to see first hand on the hill. The following screen captures give a feel for the quiz.
How To Use The Quiz
The quiz is versatile, and can be used in a number of different ways.
You can dip in and out of the various sections at your leisure, either as a quick test, or taking time to listen to or read the explanations. A number of groups have used it as a “pub quiz” style club evening. Although light hearted, this format produced a lot of discussion, and could be backed up with a day on the hill. It can also form the basis of a lecture or be delivered in a classroom.
SpotChecks in Avalanche Awareness was created by:
Malcolm Seddon of CAST and Ian Sherrington of Glenmore Lodge, with the support of The Catherine Smith Memorial Trust
